Cleft related speech deficits can be difficult to diagnose and treat. In this session, the speaker will discuss how to identify and treat cleft related speech disorders.  Normal articulation errors vs. cleft related errors will also be discussed in addition to velopharyngeal insufficiency.


Following the course, participants will be able to:

1. State the difference between normal and cleft related errors

2. Define velopharyngeal insufficiency

3. Identify hypernasality vs. hyponasality

4. Name treatment techniques for cleft related speech disorders

Melissa Montiel, MA, CCC-SLP works at the Medical University of South Carolina and has been practicing for 9 years. She is on the cleft lip/palate and velopharyngeal insufficiency teams and treats cleft patients weekly. She has been published nationally and travels internationally every year for cleft related medical work
