Presenters: Kerry Callahan-Mandulak, PhD, CCC-SLP and Barbara Moore, MA CCC-SLP
Dr. Kerry Callahan Mandulak and Barbara Moore will focus on the selection of appropriate management procedures and strategies, evidence-based practice, planning, selecting and documenting appropriate treatment goals and objectives and understanding how to administer such treatment for for the repaired cleft palate child.

Objective

This Course is the 2nd of 2 in a 6 hour presentation on assessment & treatment of cleft palate. 

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Identify terminology used to describe speech and resonance patterns found in cleft palate and/or velopharyngeal dysfunction;
  • Understand the role of the speech/language pathologist as a key participant on the cleft/craniofacial team and how his/her assessment outcomes influence overall management of the identified problems.
  • List treatment goals and activities for specific speech errors related to cleft palate, in addition to identifying speech errors that cannot be remediated through speech therapy.
About Kerry: Dr. Kerry Mandulak’s clinical career has been focused on the assessment and treatment of children and families affected by cleft lip and palate, velopharyngeal dysfunction, and other craniofacial disorders. Her clinical interests formed the basis for her research interests pursued during her doctoral training at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, including applying acoustic analysis techniques for investigation of speech production and speech perception in children with repaired cleft palate. She finished her doctorate in September 2009.

Dr. Mandulak is active in the American Cleft Palate – Craniofacial Association and was recently elected to the executive council. Locally, she serves on the Medical Advisory Committee for Smile Oregon, a not-for-profit organization committed to improving care of children affected by cleft lip and palate in Oregon. In addition to cleft palate and craniofacial disorders, Dr. Mandulak is passionate about working with people who stutter. She is a member of the local stuttering support group, loves mentoring students with this specific clinical interest, and provides speech therapy whenever she can.

About Barbara: Barbara Moore, M.A., CCC-SLP, is the owner/Clinical Director of Speech Pathology Associates, in Irvine, CA and has been practicing speech pathology for over 35 years.She received her masters degree from California State University, Los Angeles and was awarded a clinical fellowship in cleft palate/craniofacial at Duke University Medical Center. Barbara has been active with the Childrens Hospital of Orange County Cleft/Craniofacial Panel for 30 years. In addition, she is an Assistant Clinical Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of California, Irvine and an adjunct faculty member at Chapman University in Orange, CA where she teaches the cleft/craniofacial seminar.

60 Minutes: Early Intervention

  • Goals and implementation

90 Minutes: Treatment Plans

  • establishing goals based on assessment results
  • hierarchy for treating identified sound errors
  • techniques for eliminating compensatory articulation errors
  • reducing phoneme-specific nasal emissions
  • therapy techniques for correction of placement errors
  • treatment of language and voice disorders
  • treatment in the presence of dental anomalies/appliances
  • treatment in the presence of velopharyngeal dysfunction

30 Minutes: Video/audio samples of therapy techniques for treating speech/resonance disorders related to cleft palate and velopharyngeal dysfunction.
